Winning the first Grand Panel Case of the IP High Court (IP High Court, September 30, 2005) ("Ichitaro" Case)

Eiichi Fukushima, Hiroshi Suga and Naoko Omukai represented JustSystems Corporation ("JustSystems") in defending against a patent infringement lawsuit brought by Matsushita Electronic Industrial Co. Ltd. ("Matsushita," now known as Panasonic Corporation), seeking injunctive relief against JustSystems for its sale of the Japanese word processing software "Ichitaro" and the integrated graphics software "Hanako."
It was the first case in which the IP High Court called its Grand Panel, comprised of five judges, to make a decision. The Grand Panel of the IP High Court ruled in favor of JustSystems, stating that the patent of Matsushita for the help function of a software program was invalid for lack of inventiveness and therefore could not be enforced against JustSystems. The IP High Court overruled the Tokyo District Court ruling which found patent infringement by JustSystems.
